Welcome to Monsters in Cinema!
“He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster. And if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.”- Friedrich Nietzsche
Hey everyone, I'm the teacher for this class, Louis Walles. This class was originally taught by Professor Miette Bynny and taken over by Professor Daphne Marin-Booth, who passed it over to February Fortescue, once Daphne retired. It was briefly taught by Joey Stark and returned to February Fortescue, and is currently being offered by Louis Walles. There have been several changes made, most notably this class is now a one term class.
This class will focus on the study of different monsters and creatures portrayed in film. We will examine a multitude of creatures like Ghosts/supernatural, Zombies, and the Boogeyman/Freddy Kruger. This class will focus on the different monsters/creatures we have seen from the early cinema to modern day perception. We will show the basic "rules" of these monsters and how over time the "rules" have changed on how they act. Also we will compare the monsters in cinema to those in the Harry Potter Universe and how they relate to each other. I will mention films that are family oriented & more adult oriented just to show the wide spectrum of how monsters are used in film. If you wish to view the movies and are underage, feel free to ask your parents permission to get them to rent the movies for you. Also, I know there are many many many monster movies out there, but I am taking the most well known movies and some that seem to challenge the conventional thought of the monsters. I can't mention all movies, though I wish I could.
***DISCLAIMER*** Since some of these films are rated "R" (American rating meaning no one under the age of 17 can view them without a parent or guardian) I will be taking out most of the graphic content due to the ages of the students on HOL. This is just precaution. However, there may be some content that will be mentioned but it will be purely kept at a PG-13 level. If you feel that this class is too much for you once you have started it, feel free to email me and I will drop you from the course.
